We are offering this series as a tool for parents that can be used in conjunction with any materials and resources being provided by your school district. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy & Instruction Dept.

I currently serve as a Master Teacher in Tucson Unified School District’s Curriculum and Instruction - Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Instruction Department since 2017.

I am a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Sociology and I have a graduate degree in Education from Pittsburg State University. While at the University of Missouri, I double-minored in History and African American Studies and completed graduate hours in both Sociology and Social Work.

Prior to teaching I worked for a GE Capital business as a Competitive Intelligence Analyst. I began teaching in 2003 in Kansas City, Kansas. I initially taught social studies to grades 6-8. In 2006, I moved to high school and taught both World and American History. In high school, I have also taught Economics, IB Economics, American Government and Sociology.

While teaching Economics, I was awarded Star Teacher and district Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2011. I have also been recognized by the Kansas City, Kansas Rotary Club as an Educator of the Year, on the Kansas State PTSA teacher “Wall of Fame” in 2011 and as a Kansas Governor’s Teacher of Influence recipient in 2014. I have sponsored a variety of clubs and activities including Senior Class Sponsor and Varsity Cheerleading Coach. In addition, I have sponsored student trips to England, France, Scotland, Italy and Greece.

My husband (a retired school administrator) and I moved to Arizona in 2016. I taught middle school for one year and then joined the CRPI Department. As a teacher leader in Arizona, I served on the Superintendent’s Advisory Council and in 2019, I was selected to participate in TUSD’s Leadership Prep Academy. In Kansas, I served as both Site Council President and PTSA Executive Board Member at two different schools as well as often serving as a New Teacher Mentor.

In my present role, I work with 15-20 teachers each year who are committed to learning and implementing culturally responsive teaching strategies and culturally relevant content. It is incredibly fulfilling.
